Bringing the Holy Land Home: The Crusades, Chertsey Abbey, and the Reconstruction of a Medieval Masterpiece

Where was the Seal of Amalric produced?

By Omar Afifi '24

As the king of the Christian kingdom of Jerusalem, the seal was made in Jerusalem. However, it’s important to paint a picture of how Jerusalem was during the time period after the First Crusade in 1099.

After the Christian forces were able to penetrate the Muslim army in Jerusalem in 1099, many crusaders returned to Europe. The new kingdom established its capital away from all major trade routes. An account stated that Muslims and Jews were either deported or banned from the city. As a result, many houses were abandoned and the city’s population decreased drastically. It was centered around the Holy Sepulchre and the Tower of David. The animated video attached gives us a better understanding of 12th century Jerusalem.

Since the city’s population decreased drastically, the kingdom decided to begin inviting previously deported Christians to live in the city. Many Eastern Christian sects began inhabiting the city and they were called “Syrians” by the Crusaders. The economy of the city was mainly sustained by tourism from Chrisitian pilgrims.

Furthermore, there were many military orders in Jerusalem. For example, the Knights Hospitaller was designed to provide healthcare to Christian pilgrims. However, the order developed to defend Muslim encroachments as well. The Knights Templar, the second military order, served to protect the boundaries of the Kingdom of Jerusalem.
