Bringing the Holy Land Home: The Crusades, Chertsey Abbey, and the Reconstruction of a Medieval Masterpiece

Where was this produced?

by Augusta Holyfield '22

This manuscript was likely produced in Paris, France, although some scholars place its creation in England or Flanders. The 12th century saw an artistic renaissance and renewal, during which much of the artistic production moved north. When the Morgan Crusader Bible was made, Paris was a center for manuscript creation, in part due to the prosperity and stability ushered in by King Louis IX reign. The style of the manuscript fits within the French gothic style and is similar to the stained glass windows inside Sainte-Chapelle, also commissioned by King Louis IX.
