Creating a Collection: A Tour Through the Smith College Museum of Art

J. Alden Weir's "Delft Plate (Peaches)"

Delft Plate, or Peaches, is thought to be one of the earliest artworks bought Smith. Records show that the painting may have been bought by President Seelye from J. Alden Weir by as early as 1882.

The painting was sold in 1947, with one other Weir painting whose location is still unknown. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts bought the painting from Gimbels Department Store for $1200.
