Company 3282 was organized in 1939, at Camp Dix, New Jersey. The Company spent time in Montana. They created their Company Review while stationed at Camp F-60, near Dillon, Montana. The Company arrived at Dillon in 1939 and was assigned the project of developing the surrounding forest for recreation.

On April 2, 1939, a cadre of twenty-five men, drawn from camps in New York and New Jersey, arrived at Fort Dix, New Jersey, to form the nucleus around which was to be organized Co. 3282. On April 4, 50 replacements from New York and New Jersey camps and enough rookies to bring the company strength to 200 were added.

On April 10, the company, with Lieutenant Leonard J. Smith as Company Commander and Emil J. Gerard as Junior Officer, left Fort Dix, bound for Montana. It arrived at Camp Birch Creek F-60, 23 miles from Dillon, on April 13, replacing Co. 4786 which was disbanded. The boys from the largest city in the world were unloaded at Apex, which is, undoubtedly, the smallest city in the world consisting, as it does, of one railroad station about twelve by fourteen feet. That the boys so readily adjusted themselves to this new and strange environment, is, indeed, a great tribute to them. While there was more than the usual amount of homesickness, only a very small number succumbed and “went over the hill.”

It was tough going at first. Being a newly organized company there were no company funds and little company property. However, through the whole-heated co-operation of the entire personnel, the company was soon put on a solid financial basis and is rapidly improving.

Co. 3282 is the only camp in Beaverhead Forest. The projects cover a wide range, including roads, telephone lines, fences, camp grounds, and other forest projects. Fortunately, there has been little call for fire fighting but the boys are well trained and ready for any emergency.

The company has made an enviable safety record. It tied with two other companies for first place in the District Safety Contest at the end of the first quarter of 1940. Camp F-60 has worked 40,199 man-days without a lost time accident.
