Thanks for your patience during our recent outage at scalar.usc.edu. While Scalar content is loading normally now, saving is still slow, and Scalar's 'additional metadata' features have been disabled, which may interfere with features like timelines and maps that depend on metadata. This also means that saving a page or media item will remove its additional metadata. If this occurs, you can use the 'All versions' link at the bottom of the page to restore the earlier version. We are continuing to troubleshoot, and will provide further updates as needed. Note that this only affects Scalar projects at scalar.usc.edu, and not those hosted elsewhere.

The fourfold classification scheme started to develop in the third century and became standardized in the sixth century.
Classics經 comprises the Thirteen Classics of Confucianism (十三經), commentaries on the classics, music, and the "lesser learning" (小學).
History史 contains historical works and documents, as well as works in geography, epigraphy (金石學), historiography, and bibliography.
Masters子 includes a wide range of subject areas, such as masters and hundred schools of thought (諸子百家) of the late Warring States (475-221 BC), agriculture, medicine, fine arts, astronomy, math, encyclopedias (類書), and Buddhist and Daoist works.
Literature集 primarily consists of literary works and anthologies, collected works of individual authors, and poems.
