ChicanaDiasporic: A Nomadic Journey of the Activist Exiled

Chicana 1969

1969 the Chicanas come together with Chicanos to establish a movement. The chicanos want the numbers but not necessarily the ideas since Chicano ideology suggests love of land, an idealist (read romanticized and unrealistic—use marks dismissal of ideology and history, maybe add a little arendt and her suspicions of the roots of totalitarian behaviors in manufactured interpretations of historic origins). The Chicanos in the academy and the community believe themselves to have the answers as they are one leg up (from Chicanas) on the Sandovalian hierarchy of rule. The Chicanas, as carriers of culture (ask Evey Chapa) do not willingly agree to take supporting roles—again.

Wright’s Ephiphenomenal interpellation (USE QUOTE HERE) offers that not every Chicana responds to Chicano oppression in the same way. Some say nothing, others are vocal in their resistance both directly and indirectly, engaging in performative acts of writing, articles, corridos, bibliographies, essays, and poetry. Others engage in performative actions, demanding time at conferences to address issues of oppression, banging on tables in organizational meetings, learning to swear and drink beer with the Chicanos in earnest displays of female machismo in the hopes of carving out spaces where Chicana identity can co-exist.
