The Burma Bucknell Connection

Current Relationship

Currently on campus, the Burmese Cultural Organization holds an annual tea party introducing guests to aspects of Burmese culture. Guests dress up in Burmese costumes, play with sample toys, eat snack foods brought by the Burmese students and cooked by Dining Services, and get their names written in Burmese. The celebration is usually held in the Spring Semester and is club-run.

Bucknell has also released a mini-documentary on the Burma-Bucknell relationship featuring Jessica Khin ’16 M’18 and Win Kyaw ’19. It also features English Professor John Rickard and Former Jewish Chaplin Serena Fujita.

Since the year 2000, Burmese students at Bucknell have also been supported by the efforts of U Kyaw Win, founding president of the Foundation of Democracy in Burma and Professor Emeritus of Counselling Services at Orange Coast College, Costa Mesa CA. He established the Shaw Loo Memorial Scholarship with the help of many supporters, which now helps Burmese students afford an education at Bucknell.
