Gold stars indicate approval of Strand's actions, red splats indicate disapproval. Note how the East Coast contrasts with the West. Many people living outside of Oregon found out about the dismissal case when an article was published in The New York Times. Malamud came from the East Coast, and the difference in reaction highlights the cultural differences that both Malamud and Levin (Malamud's fictional main character in A New Life) encounter in their move to the West.
