At the Crossroads of the Senses

Flower - 8

The flower is a perfect synaesthetic object in Wilde's Salomé. In its fragrance and colors, it bridges vision, scent, and taste. Anticipating Skriabin's and Kandinsky's abstract use of shifting colors to accompany music, Wilde's flowers change their hues from silver and green to the reds and oranges of pomegranate flowers and  fiery red petals to white and, finally, blue.
