The "Hustle" in Kung Fu Hustle

I believe that the ‘Hustle’ in Kung Fu Hustle explains the summary of the movie. Hustle is a word that has two different meanings. It could be defined as a fraud or swindle. It can have another meaning of working hard to achieve a goal. The story revolves around the main character Sing. The story begins with Sing arriving at Pigsty Alley to ‘hustle’ the residents for money. Sing claims that he is part of the infamous Axe gang and that his friend, Bone was an important member of the gang. However, Sing’s plan backfires and he later gets beaten and chased out of Pigsty Alley. Another scene in the movie depicts Sing and Bone hanging around in the streets of Shanghai. Sing remarks that he came to Shanghai to ‘hustle’ or work towards a better future. Sing remarks that he himself is quite smart and that he had the foundations to become a doctor or lawyer. However, due to an unfortunate event when he was a child he got ‘hustled’ by a begger that ‘tricked’ him into giving his education savings for a kungfu manual. Another reason why I believe that the movie had the word ‘Hustle’ was a satire on kungfu as well. Kung Fu has an image of martial prowess gained through meditation and hard practice. However, later in the movie Sing miraculously gained Kung fu prowess and mastery after he was almost pummeled to death by The Beast. It seemed in a way that the word ‘Hustle’ was making fun of the hard work that was required to gain such mastery of Kung fu. It seemed like that Sing kind of cheated or swindled to attain his magical prowess of Kung fu.
