Houhai

Hutongs in the north west part of the old city surround a series of lakes that wind their way down the western part of old Beijing, and including Beihai Park and the Zhongnanhai Government Complex.

At the north end is Houhai is the name for the two smaller of these lakes that surround a bars and restaurants area that is one of the hip nightlife parts of the city. It is in walking distance to Nanluoguxiang and the Drum Tower, and this area is one of the bohemian areas of the city.
