Hari Kunzru - Transmission

Hari Kunzru's article, Transmission, details Dubai's current and on-going developments. Through the character Guy, we are able to learn about how new development has continued to be a priority in Dubai. Guy travels to Dubai to collaborate and do business with Mr. Al-Rahman, who owns many international golf resorts around the world. In Transmission, Guy starts off meeting Abdullah, Al-Rahman's nephew. Abdullah accompanies Guy across the city. As Abdullah drives Guy to his hotel, Guy sees half-built skyscrapers and 8-lane freeways. This symbolizes the ongoing construction in Dubai. As mentioned in the article, Dubai is referred to as "Islamic Las Vegas" due to its modern architectural designs and new construction in the middle of a desert. As Guy arrives at the hotel, he is greeted by many international workers, from Indonesia to Philippines to Singapore. This shows the demographics of most workers in Dubai; they come from various countries. There is also a variety of food choices, which may be to attract and fit the tastes of Dubai's business guests. The next day, Abdullah takes Guy to the golf course, where he meets Mr. Al-Rahman. This is an important encounter has it demystifies Guy's assumption about Al-Rahman's exclusive golf resort business. Al-Rahman explains that his golf resort already requires green fees, which would increase if he would do business with Guy. The reason Rahman may not be inclined to join hands with Guy is because he would accrue more fees. Kunzru's Transmission puts experiences into context for outsiders. Dubai is an ever-evolving city that continues to instill a sense of disbelief.
