The Original Building

Built in 1924, the original building consisted of one four story bread factory, a long one story connected building to unload grain, and the stables / hay loft. The unloading area has been converted into several commercial shops, while the hayloft now houses our dojo. The two scrolls on the Shomen cover bricked up openings where hay was lifted into the loft. The wooden rafters and pillars are apparently the original construction (Don Sensei Q16). The entrance to the dojo is around the back of the building, and up a narrow flight of stairs, as the stables were located behind the main use areas of the building.

The traditional loft integrates very well with the Aikikai renovation (Don Sensei Q15). The large open spaces facilitate weapons training with quarterstaff and spear for Ken-Jutsu, while Ju-Jutsu and Aikido are throwing martial arts that need ample headspace. The wooden structure fits well with Japanese ideals of nature and clean construction not overly ornamented.

Unfortunately, the only building being protected by heritage currently is the main factory, and our dojo is set to be torn down to make way for condo buildings.
