Practical Challenges
Adapting a space not originally meant for martial arts requires some additions. A sprung floor topped with tatami mats is absolutely crucial for safe practice when one can spend an entire class hitting the ground repeatedly. Change rooms and showers are needed, an office, as well as storage for training equipment. A significant deal of headspace is required for martial arts that train with weapons.
One challenge lay in that the floor had an 8 inch drop from one end to the other. This required a substructure to level out the room before the sprung floor could be added. Additionally, structural pillars interrupt the training area and could not be removed. Don Sensei mentioned this as his only regret about the space (Don Sensei Q15).
