INSIDE THE INTERIOR

What is the contrast of the main space as an area to move through from one perspective, and a place to sit and wait on the other?
The arrangement of the space and its objects play a significant role in how visitors and residents view and, also experience the space. Upon arrival into the building, the immediate impression it gives off is, a very well organized and open space. Through the use of minimum colour, one is not distracted from the reason they are there. With the use of materials such as wood, concrete, glass and steel, Parkin's attempt to let the structure speak for itself succeeds. The Vice President of NORR, the successor firm to John B. Parkin Associates of Toronto, which designed the station referred to the station as "a cathedral". When in the space, it gives off a spiritual feeling.

Moving through the space: A central hub for ticket information is flanked by rows of chairs and amenities such as bathrooms, a coffee shop and a lounge. Located behind the ticket booth are two parallel escalators, which lead to the loading platforms. Situated between the two escalators is a glass-encased elevator spiralled by a large concrete ramp which leads to the lower levels of the station. All this can be said to have been intentional by Parkin, as it allows one to move through the space effortlessly and experience it in order to get to their train. With the space's function and simplicity, not a lot of movement is required. Upon arrival, you locate a place to sit. Only when boarding is being announced, you become hungry, or want to use the bathroom, is movement required.

Sitting in the space: The arrangement of the seats in the station is very structured and linear and could be based on the structural grid of the building. Aligning the furniture in a geometrical configuration with the grid system is a technique often used by architects to create order and make the space visually more structured. However, due to lack of colour and minimum ornamentation, one could get easily bored if they do not have something keep themselves occupied as they wait. With the lack of noise, it is an ideal space to be in if one wants to sit down and relax with a book, or play music through their earphones.
