Thanks for your patience during our recent outage at scalar.usc.edu. While Scalar content is loading normally now, saving is still slow, and Scalar's 'additional metadata' features have been disabled, which may interfere with features like timelines and maps that depend on metadata. This also means that saving a page or media item will remove its additional metadata. If this occurs, you can use the 'All versions' link at the bottom of the page to restore the earlier version. We are continuing to troubleshoot, and will provide further updates as needed. Note that this only affects Scalar projects at scalar.usc.edu, and not those hosted elsewhere.

Chapels in Universities

However, over time, universities were one of the most significant expressions of church’s pastoral concerns, as it not only presented cultural values, but “a real opportunity for encountering Christ,” as noted in the Congregation for Catholic education pontifical council for Culture of 1994. Ideologies that were once dominant came to a collapse after the confrontation in 1968-1970, creating an institutional crisis. The study of seminarians decreased, with a total 72% decline in male seminarians (Stark, 2000), and universities became open to everyone. University culture presented new cultural challenges, stress becoming the main factor of the loss or the neglection of faith. The stress caused from juggling education, the professional life, and the private life created a distance from the bible for some individuals, causing a decline in their academic and social lives as well. These students were offered help from the church when they found themselves without guidance in the face of these problems. Therefore, a chapel, or a spiritual space of similar value, is beneficial to have in universities. (Laghi, 1994)
