The Front Porch

The Creole characteristic of front porches came from Africa, where it had been a common architectural design for centuries. The front porch was brought to New Orleans by Africans, who, when they arrived in America began to build structures they were familiar with (Zewde). The front porch quickly became a common architectural feature in New Orleans, and went on to be adapted by many other American styles, particularly in the South. Below is the two room house of the Yoruba People in Africa, where a porch can be seen coming off the front of the house (Zewde) .
