Modern Architectures of North America

Marine motifs

McKim, Meet & White used an eclectic approach to the architecture as a means to convey multiple messages. Besides a heavy use of decoration that literally referenced the republic of Cuba, various marine motifs were also incorporated into the decorative program. References to lobsters, crabs, or shells were no doubt an attempt to appeal to tourists and to remind them of their location on the Caribbean ocean.
