Modern Architectures of North America

Fenestration

The arrangement of the windows indicates that this building is not meant to house residential spaces. In keeping with earlier hospital architecture – and the sentiment that people with leprosy ought not to be seen – lunette or transom windows were used to let in some light without “[allowing] outsiders to stare” into patients’ living quarters (Yanni 20). Both clinical and residential spaces would be designed with such privacy considerations in mind. The windows’ size and positioning so close to the ground level further indicate that this building housed administrative functions.
