Modern Architectures of North America

Seating

The original chairs used in Coppelia were reproductions of a famous design by Harry Bertoia. Italian-born Bertoia became an American citizen in 1946 and moved to Pennsylvania that same year to work for the Knoll furniture company. In 1952, he released the Bertoia Collection with Knoll that included the iconic Diamond chair ("Harry Bertoia"). Coppelia chairs were replications of another design from this collection. This incorporation of iconic American design from an American company demonstrates Cuba's inability to escape American influence entirely.
