Central lawn

From an aerial view, the hospital campus resembles a small village; the significant open space that surrounds the structures further isolates the hospital from the world at large, creating a spatial barrier meant to prevent the spread of disease. The axial plan allows for centralization of various administrative and medical functions; orienting the patients’ residences around a central courtyard continues the theme of turning inward and (quite literally) keeps patients’ attention turned to the world at Carville rather than the world beyond.
