Mountains

Surrounded by mountains, the geographical location further treated the detainees as prisoners, as ‘others’ separated from society, isolated both physically as well as metaphorically. The detainees did not enjoy the protection of the constitution, which was the main catalyst for their eventual release. As Roosevelt put: “it is felt by a great many lawyers that under the constitution they can’t be kept locked up in concentration camps” (Robinson, By Order of the President: FDR and the Internment of Japanese Americans).
