Dense vegetation make the interior of the city block ideal for passing through or socializing.

A canopy of trees shields locals and tourists from the intense Caribbean sun. Indeed, the park and ice cream shop attract people from all backgrounds including soldiers, government officials, students, and black marketers (jineteros). Historically, a small population of gay people has also found refuge there (Scarpaci).
For these reasons, director Tomás Gutierrez Alea chose Coppelia as the site of his 1993 Oscar-nominated film Fresa y Chocolate (Strawberry and Chocolate). In the film, two characters who are opposite both socially and politically reconcile their differences (Stout). The image below is a still from a scene in the movie that was filmed at Coppelia.
