Conclusion

In conclusion, the connection between the role of poetry and issues such as sexual assault is a fairly recent discussion. The women's movement of the 1960s and 70s marked a rise in feminist poetry, but the awareness surrounding it is much greater today. The key thing to note here is that each of these topics have existed since the beginning of time: sexual assault and poetry. The two have not always coincided, though, and now, through these issues being exposed in society in a broader cultural spectrum, themes of sexual abuse are being found in contemporary literary works.

A focus was placed on Rupi Kaur because of her immense popularity - she has, in a way, made poetry "trendy." Through her works' popularity, Kaur is able to address several heavy topics, raising awareness to the trauma that things like sexual assault bring. The wide response she has received about these poems helps indicate the severity of sexual assault and how many people, specifically women, it has affected. Poetry gives people a place to express their troubled times, and readers a place to finally find a voice that is saying what they themselves cannot. With poetry converting into this digital age of short, relatable pieces, a platform is provided for women to come out about their victimized experiences, whether they are the ones writing and expressing, or the ones sharing the posts saying "#MeToo."
