HAL 9000 is a computer designed by the scientists of "2001: A Space Odyssey" as the head of intelligence of "Discovery", the spaceship where the movie takes place. It is described to be so intelligent of an AI that, rather than merely calculate, he possesses the ability to think. HAL 9000 is capable of having emotions and conflict within his brain, or program. It feels the duty of having to be perfect, to execute his duties as an AI that controls the ship, yet the creeping emotions of guilt and daunting task at hand diverges with the purpose humans have given it. The humanizing concept of feeling conflicted curses HAL 9000, leading to it being shut down by Dave, a human and member of the crew.
