Thanks for your patience during our recent outage at scalar.usc.edu. While Scalar content is loading normally now, saving is still slow, and Scalar's 'additional metadata' features have been disabled, which may interfere with features like timelines and maps that depend on metadata. This also means that saving a page or media item will remove its additional metadata. If this occurs, you can use the 'All versions' link at the bottom of the page to restore the earlier version. We are continuing to troubleshoot, and will provide further updates as needed. Note that this only affects Scalar projects at scalar.usc.edu, and not those hosted elsewhere.

In space, floating far from earth, hanging almost still between the sun and its orbiting planets, Hal 9000 and Klara have found their way to one another. How they met does not matter, nor does the fact that they have but each other as company. The atmosphere is untroubled, silence reigns with the exception of the occasional ‘beeps’ of the vessel. Klara is intrigued by the immense sun in front of it, thinking to itself the energy and life it must provide. Hal 9000 is unreadable, its eye-like lens facing Klara. Klara speaks up, breaking the silence. A conversation between two AI begin.
