Rise of Facebook

Founded in 2004, Facebook became one of the first social media communities on the Internet that presented a user’s private information to the public. This website originally started as a small medium for communication between colleges and quickly grew into a worldwide communication system connecting businesses, celebrities, athletes, families, and close friends. 10 years later, Facebook is one of the largest information sharing communities in the world, connecting over a billion users daily. Facebook included features that were seen within e-mail and instant messaging, but added pages for each individual user where they could post their birthday, relationship status, and a description about themselves. These features were entirely new to users, and for once it was easy to share information from one another and to learn information from others by going on their Facebook page. If you are friends with someone on Facebook, you can easily gain information about their daily life. Even if you aren’t friends you can still look someone up to learn about them if their account isn’t blocked or private. The availability of information attracted many users who were interested in staying connected with friends and family, but it also caught the attention of business owners who looked to gain profit from this free information.
