Reviewing Digital Resources: The Database of Early English Playbooks (DEEP) - Peer Reviews
Although formal reviews of digital resources like DEEP are difficult to find, a picture of the site's usefulness to researchers can be gleaned from the discussions surrounding it, especially in an online context. Viewed in this way, DEEP is well regarded. The Folger Shakespeare Library lists DEEP under its "Teaching Resources" selections (this content has now been removed from the website), a list derived from a roundtable sponsored by the Centre for Renaissance and Reformation Studies at the University of Toronto. The roundtable included Sarah Werner (Folger Shakespeare Library), Anne Caldiron (Florida State University), Alexandra Gillespie (University of Toronto), Christopher Kyle (Syracuse University), and Peter Stallybrass (University of Pennsylvania), all of whom are respected in the field of early modern studies. Shakespeare's Globe in London offers DEEP as an "Online Database and Index" in their section for recommended online resources. The University of Victoria's own Map of Early Modern London lists DEEP under its links to other resources. The project is included in courses on Tudor and Stuart drama, as evidenced by its inclusion in graduate course descriptions at the University of Notre-Dame in 2011. Early Modern Resources, maintained by Sharon Howard at the University of Sheffield, lists DEEP as a resource. All Is True, a blog maintained by University of York (UK) postgraduate student, Mike Stumpf, does likewise. Most importantly for those searching for a more traditional endorsement, DEEP was the subject of an article in the peer-reviewed journal Literature Compass in 2008: "Early Modern Digital Scholarship and DEEP: Database of Early English Playbooks." In an amusing turn that typifies the nature of digital scholarship in the humanities, the article is by Drs. Farmer and Lesser.
