Shia Miller: A Winter's Day and Night

A vinters mesles - A Winter's Day and Night
Originally published in Mayrev, vol. 1 (February, 1925): 15-16.
Translated by Tamar Schneider Levin.

Cold and warm ---
Outside the frost was burning. In his room the fireplace was heating up.  Hunched over in a chair, he sat with his hands extended toward the fire positioned as during the priestly blessing.
She arrived flushed with cold.
“How warm it is at your place! And how poetic! Darkness, a little fire burning. Lovely!”
She sat herself down on his knees.
“What were you thinking about?”
“Before you arrived? About Prometheus.”
“And now?”
“About -- Diana.”
A frosty cheek brushed against a flushed cheek. He shivered.
“I brought in the cold.”
“Have you ever seen an iceman working in summer?”
She starred into his eyes.
“Under the burning sun he delivers ice. You are one of the winter heat bearers. In the burning frost you bring warmth.”
“Really?”
He convinced her it was so.

Snow---
Heavy, stolid, cold air. The fireplace - a ruin from a chimney after a fire.   Steam rises from nostrils and pulling an arm out from under the the quilt is like entering an ice hole. Still, they arose and went down into the street.
“Snow! Snow!”
She clapped her dainty hands, wanted to catch a snowflake.
“Little angels! Doves! Winter bloom!”
They stopped themselves and gazed upward. A winter bloom fell on her eyelash. They gazed at each other and burst out laughing. Arm leaned against arm.
“It’s actually warm!”
Warmed now they strolled, dancing a morning dance. The winter blooms were trampled beneath human feet. A muddy liquid replaced the little angles and doves. The sun started to shine.

The sun---
“I’m hot.”
She unbuttoned her coat.
“We’ll go over to the shade. Look, crystal is hanging there.”
“Crystal without sunshine is dead ice.”
“My sun child.”
The cat, rolled up like a ball is apparently a sun child too. So is the dog lying with his front paws outstretched, and the cow that stands chewing his cud and blinks his eyes.
Aflame she removed her hat, shook out her blond hair joyously calling out:
“Gold!”
“My gold!” he replied and stretched his arm over her shoulders.

Solemnity--
The West is fire red. Higher--blue with a veil of pearl grey snow dust.
The frost begins at night, freezes under foot, tomorrow it will singe.
Back in the house. It’s twilight. Still.
“Why so sad, pensive?”
“A day is dying.”
“A night is being born.”
“Labor pains.”
Restored. Sparklers light themselves in space. In the room four little sparklers lit up. A sickle cuts sharply into the room. Quietly the pearl grey snow shimmer enters.
“Shall we light a fire?”
“Only in the fireplace.”
Hush, Quiet. Again it is night.
