Foster, who had visited the Cooperative Center during his bid for president in 1928, and James W. Ford, the first African-American to run for Vice President in the 20th century. At the time, the CPUSA advocated a policy of “Self-Determination for the Black Belt” and was a leading force in the fight for civil rights. Having directed the CPUSA’s Committee for Black Workers, James W. Ford was nominated as the CPUSA’s Vice Presidential nominee in the elections of 1932, 1936 and 1940.
