Welcome to The Knotted Line
This project has three major components:
3 min and 9 min.
To browse through the visuals of the project independently of the other content, try the Paintings and Silhouettes paths.
Those with coding skills may be interested in the Data Sources path. In the spirit of open access, the data which drives The Knotted Line has been made publicly available, and this path explains how that data is organized and structured—remixes and mashups are welcomed!
As a final note, The Knotted Line draws upon existing content from a wide array of sources. Original content published here is made available under a Creative Commons license.
Thanks for your time—now, dive in.

- A tactile, interactive experience for exploring the historical relationships between freedom and confinement. We recommend exploring this part first (requires Flash).
- The Knotted Line Curriculum available for PDF download or online through this site.
- This site, a collection of media and resources which can be navigated using the menu to the left. The Timeline has pages with more information on every historical moment in The Knotted Line.
