Restorative justice work with juveniles continues to expand in Alameda County, California. The work dramatically reduces the recidivism rate and increases community safety without an expansion of police presence.

Update from 2014: The work has continued to grow in cities across the country. This article from the New York Times follows efforts in West Oakland. This video and toolkit by Teachers Unite speaks to the growing movement.

Discussion Questions:

  • Is it possible to truly forgive someone?
  • Why might increased police presence support more violence in certain neighborhoods?
