Yugoslavia

Folder 5

Folder 5 (21 documents) - February 1964 - November 1965
Primarily contains memorandums and special reports with a few other types of documents bookending the folder. This folder has a particular focus on the importance foreign assistance in perpetuating Yugoslavia’s ability to buffer Moscow’s influence – including a memorandum with LBJ’s signature of approval. Yugoslavia’s individual interest in acquiring missiles and collaborating with the U.S. on nuclear power plants also makes an appearance. The special reports at the end of the folder offer context to Yugoslavia’s relations with the U.S. and the Soviet bloc that is sometimes lacking in one-page memos. Discussions on Yugoslavia’s internal politics also feature in these special reports, specifically regarding the successor of Yugoslavia’s "aging dictator" and the transition of parliament from a “rubber stamp” organization to a somewhat valid part of government processes. In addition to parliament, Yugoslavia’s intelligentsia increasingly served as a bulwark against absolute power of the regime.
