Discussion Topics

Each of the discussion topics listed below is linked to related primary sources. Each source is followed by questions for discussion. Choose a topic you believe will resonate with your audience or, if you plan to use in a classroom, a topic of significance for your students. Circulate the sources and questions connected to the topic before the discussion. One way to structure the discussion is to introduce one source at a time and as you bring in additional sources from the topic ask discussants to discuss relationships among them.

Of course you do not need to use the sources under these discussion topics as they are arranged here. Feel free to mix and match sources you believe will be meaningful to your audience. You may also prefer other questions; the organization presented here is only one way to structure useful discussions of immigration and migration.

Most of the sources are historical; headnotes and the timelines linked to "The Big Picture" explain the context for these sources. The discussion topic "The Significance of Im/Migration Today" is linked to contemporary sources.
