After graduating from ASU with her Bachelor of Science in Education (BSE) degree in 2014 she began teaching high school civics, economics, psychology, and pre-AP world history at Harrisburg High School. While at Harrisburg, Garland led her students in advocating against a proposed book censorship and was recognized by the Zinn Education Project for her leadership and advocacy within the classroom. In 2018 Garland was awarded a James Madison Fellowship through the James Madison Memorial Foundation, funded by Congress. Garland is 1 of 53 fellows to be selected nationally for the 2018 year. This fellowship is awarded to educators dedicated to teaching constitutional history and keeping the legacy of our founding fathers relevant and applicable. Through the fellowship, Garland will spend four weeks studying constitutional history at Georgetown University during the summer of 2018.​
