Wonderland 2022

Through The Rabbit Hole

Artist Statement

‘Through The Rabbit Hole’ is an interactive web project. It includes a body of text from Alice's Adventures in Wonderland Chapter I, illustrations created by me and Lewis Carroll, and interactive user experience design, which allows the audience to set foot into this creative wonderland created by Lewis Carroll.

Lewis Carroll introduces the power of imagination by creating a magical journey of Alice roaming in a beautifully constructed place full of surrealism and creativity. Furthermore, the creativity and imagination go beyond the story and create an amazing rhythm on paper. Lewis Carroll expands the boundary of imagination by using creative layout and typesetting as he laid out the book. For example, in Chapter III when Alice is talking to the Mouse. The body text is shaped like a puff of smoke. As Alice is wondering and does not pay attention, the text gets smaller and smaller. In this dialogue, Lewis Carroll made the text are not just the 2D carrier of the story, but part of the contextual delivering channel that reflected the scene and context.

As a visual communication designer, I am extremely inspired by his typesetting and decided to elevate it to a more contemporary design. Therefore, I decided to construct this imagery journey into an immersive experience on the web. Using animation, visual graphics, music, and user interaction, I depict an immersive experience for my audiences to reconsider the story. The rabbit hole is the intermedium trigger. My audiences can literally fall into the rabbit hole, just like experiencing a similar journey with Alice, enjoying floating text, interactive triggers, and even puzzles.
Another reason I choose a website is because of accessibility. USC library has built an online gallery for the Lewis Carroll collection. I wish my work and also the Lewis Carroll collection can get more public recognition, audience engagement, and appreciation.

In conclusion, it was a great experience to create this project. I have attached a video prototype of me browsing the website. But fill free to play it around on your own!
