How to Use This Resource
For more background on the complex issues at play in this conflict, turn to the Essential Context section. Each page contains a short essay with more information on topics like temperance, women's suffrage, and Reconstruction. Then check out Bibliography/Further Reading
for sources and recommendations for more in-depth study.
Finally, we hope you will explore the Interpretive Essays section, which features thoughtful reflections on the conflict and this project from scholars, activists, writers, and community members. Currently we feature a contribution entitled "When White Women's Silence Endangers Black Women" written by Michelle Duster, a Chicago-based author, speaker, and editor and the great-granddaughter of Ida B. Wells. More of these essays will be added in the future.
