Truth-Telling: Frances Willard and Ida B. Wells

"Alien Suffrage"

In the 19th century, many US states allowed foreign-born men to vote ("alien suffrage") before they had become citizens. As Willard suggests here, some suffragists believed this practice was unfair to native-born women who were more "fit" to vote than immigrants. In the early twentieth century, anti-immigrant sentiment grew stronger, and all states ended this practice by the mid-1920s.
