Katharine L. Sharp, circa 1895-96

When discussing the history of GSLIS, the place to start is with Katharine Sharp. A graduate of the New York Library School in 1892, she was recommended by her mentor, Melvil Dewey, to be the director of the Armour Institute of Chicago. After directing this program for four years, she transferred to the Illinois State Library School where she was instrumental in turning this program into a field of study for university students. With this, she became the first dean of University of Illinois's library and information science program.
