World War II brought about tremendous changes, especially in Eastern Europe.  The Soviet Union exacted its price on Europe for the massive losses it had sustained during the war.  Taking its pieces of Berlin and Germany as outlined in the Potsdam Accord and exercising control over Poland, Hungary and Czechoslovakia, the Soviets expanded their dominance in the East.  Many resisted this domination or fled to the West to seek new lives.
