It flows through Jackson and Josephine counties in southwest Oregon and makes up one of the three northward-flowing main tributaries of the Rogue River Watershed. It runs approximately 60 miles long and drains over 600 square miles of land. The watershed supports mostly hardwood forest species such as Big Leaf Maple, Oregon White Oak, Pacific Madrone, and White Leaf Manzanita which rely on moist loamy soils and the disturbance of fire in order to survive and reproduce. Wildlife species that depend on these resources include the endangered Siskiyou Mountain salamander and threatened northern brown spotted owl. About 12,000 people live in the watershed and approximately 70% of the watershed is owned by the US Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management (Lalande, 1995).
