Voices of Dalit Activism

Arivu

Arivu was in his final year of engineering college when the consequences of being born a Dalit struck him. As the son of first generation literates within the Dalit communnity, he was raised on the prasies of Dr B.R Ambedkar, a Dalit Icon and pioneer of the Dalit Intellectual Movement.
This inspired Arivu to write songs and rap about these experiences which in turn caused his bandmates to turn against him and refuse to play his music.
"Caste touched everything, it was everywhere."

Arivu continued working on his  music which eventually led ot the production of a collective of songs in a solo album titled Therukural (Street Verses). This album made waves and helped propel a nascent hip hop movement for Dalit rights into the forefront. This caught the attention of the BJP due to 'Anti -Indian' rhetoric.

The longer you suppress your identity the more furiously it will come out, like a volcano - Arivu
