Malory, portrayed by Sandra Bullock, is a woman who attempts to save her two children, who are simply called "a boy" and "a girl." The novel describes the events that occurred five years after almost all Earth's population was slaughtered by aliens, the sight of which causes humans to commit suicide.
The film, directed by Suzanne Beer and based on the novel "The Bird Box" by Josh Malerman, features two timelines. The first set of events happens soon after the invasion and is about Malory trying to stay alive. The second set of events is about Malory trying to get the children to safety on a raft.
After the invasion of monsters, Malory and a large group of people sought refuge in a relatively safe house with considerable food supplies. After a series of terrible events, Malory, two children, and Tom will be the only ones left alive. Malory and Tom are in the wilderness attempting to live. Suddenly, a man named Rick attempts to reach them through radio and urges them to proceed down the river, where shelter is awaiting them. This is a hazardous trek. At first, Malory opposes this notion, but at the end of the film, it becomes clear why she opted to embark on such a perilous voyage with her children.
