While Scalar content is loading normally now, saving is still slow, and Scalar's 'additional metadata' features have been disabled, which may interfere with features like timelines and maps that depend on metadata. It was during his tenure that SLI became the first institution in the Deep South to integrate and enroll African American students. SLI also began to evolve from a four-year college, as graduate programs were added in 1956. This eventually led to SLI gaining university status in 1960, and the institution's name officially changed to the University of Southwestern Louisiana. President Fletcher retired in 1965. Enrollment had grown to over 5,000.
