UL Lafayette Presidents

President Fletcher in Presidential Gown

President Fletcher served as the institution's president for 25 years. It was during his tenure that SLI became the first institution in the Deep South to integrate and enroll African American students. SLI also began to evolve from a four-year college, as graduate programs were added in 1956. This eventually led to SLI gaining university status in 1960, and the institution's name officially changed to the University of Southwestern Louisiana. President Fletcher retired in 1965. Enrollment had grown to over 5,000.
