Kendrick Lamar: Self and Society

How Lamar Continues to Empower Us

Despite To Pimp a Butterfly's profound effects, his projects after TPAB only demonstrates how much more Lamar gave back to his community with music and more. His next 2017 studio LP DAMN extends his socially conscious platform to his largest audience yet, while his 2018 soundtrack for the Black Panther movie further demonstrated his support for black power. In fact, Lamar directly acknowledged how it was his responsibility to lift up those who are down on his 2022 album Mr. Morale and the Big Steppers. Even as recent as a few weeks ago from the time of writing this (December 2024), did Lamar release his arguably most empowering project yet: GNX. The album celebrates Los Angeles and Californian culture, sampling many west coast legends and even inviting mariachi band singer Deyra Barrera from the Dodgers game to record. Additionally, each song on GNX seemingly emulates different famous west coast rappers and their signature sounds such as Tupac and Nipsey Hustle.

Aside from his music, Lamar frequently donates to charities he supports and even his Compton high school. Additionally, Lamar has especially in recent years hosted community events such as the Ken and Friends concert where he brought together west coast natives from Tyler the Creator to DeMar DeRozen for a night of California love.
