Tunnels, Pools, and Ghosts: Exploring Space at St. Catherine University

Mendel Hall Math Offices

Today the offices of the math department are located in a former common room, it features the original fireplace and sconces. The common room would have been a place for students to socialize, today it is a place for students to gain extra help with math and physics courses. This office is a unique preservation of the past and spaces being reconstructed to function for the future. The old fireplace and sconces were kept when the fourth floor was remodeled to better serve the university. Thanks to the foresight of the math department this space was preserved with the renovation of the building. Keeping this fireplace helps to maintain the history of Mendel Hall as a common space for students. The fireplace of this common room preserves the story of Mendel Hall as a place to socialize and do homework. This is space is one of few that is used for a similar space then and now.
