War and Women's Sexuality

Gender specific tactics of war, such as rape, have been used to overpower and intimidate women of the adversary.it has been used in countries like ancient Greece and the use of Korean and Chinese comfort women during WWII. Rape that is committed during war traumatizes communities, breaks up families and destroys the makeup of the rising generation through “ethnic cleansing”. Rape is also used as a strategy to dehumanize women by taking away their means of reproduction when foreign objects are inserted into their vaginas and when they are infected with sexually transmitted diseases. After war has ended and all the wounds are healed, impacts of sexual violence persist through trauma, women bearing of children from the rape and then facing social stigmatization by the community. Often, these victims are separated from their families after rape due to the stigma. Moreover, the needs of these victims are ignored when they cannot be provided with medical care, therapy or compensation for their pain.
