Touchable Speculation: Crafting Critical Discourse with 3D Printing, Maker Practices, and Hypermapping

image maps

Though the hypermap included in this project is certainly nothing new, as image-mapping with annotations has existed for years (see, for example, Cecilia Wichmann's image map, "Emilio Renart's Creative Ecology"), I offer hypermapping as one method to easily overlay ideas, here in the form of scholarly exploration and writing, to a speculative object. It models one way to combine critical making with critical writing.

In the future, I intend to apply hypermapping to other scholarly 3D explorations (not just 2D images of 3D objects), including the annotation of 3D virtual spaces/things, both on screen and in VR. For a simple, though very cool, example of this, please see what I imagine is the harbinger of 3D annotation: "Naaaaw! - Star Wars" by Sketchfab user, elbriga. And for a perhaps more educational example: Amy Stenzel's "interactive clit."
