The Byzantines and their Relations with the French
The Byzantines, referred to as Greeks by Odo, were ruled at the time by Emperor Manuel I Komnenos. They have recently been engaged in war on multiple fronts. King Roger II of Sicily occupied one front, the Seljuks attacked from the East, and campaigns against Raymond of Antioch were in progress. The last time a crusading group came through Constantinople, much havoc was caused. This was not forgotten by the time of the second crusade. Manuel I made peace with the Seljuks to prepare for the coming crusaders, whose havoc is seen in Odo’s writing While Odo’s anti-Greek bias shows in his writing, his accusations of intentional sabotage may not be entirely baseless. It is possible that Manuel I intentionally let the French suffer as a form of revenge for their pillaging.
The lack of supplies in Asia minor may also come from the fact that those cities were just in combat with the Seljuk Turks. German forces also previously moved through those lands before the French, and cities can only supply so much food.
