Footbaths
Ablution Stalls
Within the winning pitch of the mosque, there were a lot of great attributes detailed that helped to truly shape the key components of a mosque that would fit into the Whittier community. As such, a few of the stylistic traits that were noted upon was this sense of simplistic styling as well as function. A steady
mixture of both style and function was discussed regarding the entire feeling
of the mosque to allow for a truly welcoming environment. Although the focus
here is highlighting the smaller areas of the mosque, such as the foot baths in
the ablution station that I will discuss, it is important to keep in mind the
overall value of the design in order to showcase every part of the mosque in a
positive manner.
While it is deemed a fairly small component of the mosque, the ablution stalls in a mosque are somewhere where many people access on a daily basis and as such, they must be kept tidy and approachable. Needless to say, if the stalls appear unapproachable then there will be this reluctance to actually put them to good use. Within the design concept, there was a great deal of emphasis on how the foot baths should be modeled and one such highlight was that a fairly modern approach should be taken in order to allow for a great blend of older
traditional styles to be fused with a more modern approach on building design.
The stylistic components of the ablution stalls themselves will take on this fairly sleek composure and be made up of components that follow suit. Such examples of potential material may be something of a sleek marble or soft stone to help make up the seating next to the foot baths themselves. In addition to this, the rest of the room will consist of materials that are of larger tiles to help emphasis a clear and concise pattern without overwhelming the entire appearance of the space. A key concept here to remember is that due to the stalls being such a small place, the inside of the space should be considered a place of universal traits that will be comfortable for anyone that enters it. One such example of this is by implementing neutral colors or those that may be similar to natural colors.
